「の」shows possession or connects two nouns. It works like 's or "of" in English. ① Possession: watashi no hon＝ my book ② Noun modifier: nihongo no sensei＝ a Japanese language teacher ③ Relation: tomodachi no namae＝ my friend's name Structure: Noun A ＋ の ＋ Noun B (A no B = B of A, or A's B)
わたしの本です。
わたしのほんです。 — It is my book.
日本語の先生です。
にほんごのせんせいです。 — He/she is a Japanese language teacher.
友達の名前は山田です。
ともだちのなまえはやまだです。 — My friend's name is Yamada.
